Catriona Sturton / Southbound 17 / GINNY / Matilda Dae
February 2 @ 8:00 pm - 11:30 pm$7
Big heart, big lungs. Sings like an angel, plays like a beast. Rock and roll lover of Heavenly and the heaviest blues. After learning to file harmonica reeds in a back alley, Catriona toured Canada as the bassist for Halifax teen-rockers, Plumtree (who inspired the cult-favourite book and movie, Scott Pilgrim, with their song of the same name). She’s toured with Italian harmonica wizards, played in a Hiroshima-based garage rock band, was a guest on The Price is Right, and has been a hired harp gun for Canadian folk and indie favourites before striking out on her own.
Southbound 17 is a harmony driven country band out of Charleston, SC. The trio began August of 2014 after playing an open mic night at a local bar. Since then, they have become an exciting part of the Low-country’s flourishing music scene. The members include Charleston natives Jack Austen, Katie Bailey, & Jacob Simmons. With the trend in modern country music leaning towards heavy production, Southbound 17 takes a stripped back approach that highlights the songwriting. Acoustic guitar, banjo, and mandolin are layered with visually compelling lyrics and tight harmonies to create a fresh country sound. They have opened for Nashville recording acts including Brandy Clark, Walker McGuire, & Mickey Guyton. The band’s self-titled debut EP is now available on iTunes, Apple Music, & Spotify. Whether playing gigs around Charleston or Nashville, Southbound 17 delivers modern country music with an Americana edge.
GINNY is the haunting country project of vocalist Lesley Marshall (Bonnie Doon), blues guitarist Catriona Sturton (ex-Plumtree), and bassist Matt Munro (Ethnotechnique). Their debut release takes on the dark romance of falling in love: the awakening; the shaking of the past; facing the inevitable end. Marshall’s haunting lyrics in combination with the guitar styling of Sturton are delivered like electric lullabies, an eerie waltz of elation and heartbreak.
